2019 Fall Najee Tourney

The fall season "Najee" MatchPlay Tourney was conceived by members from the Ohio University Open Golf League in 2014, to commence following regular-season league play. The tourney is dedicated to our good friend and avid golfer Najee Muhammad, who joined the Ohio University faculty in 1996 in the Cultural Studies in Education program (Department of Educational Studies). He also served one year as the interim chair of the Department of African American Studies. A diverse teacher and mentor, Najee was a dedicated student of the game, equally enjoying the "lesson" tee as well walking the university golf course and many other surrounding area courses. Najee passed away on March 8, 2014 (read more).

Rules

• The Najee Memorial MatchPlay Tourney is a handicapped-based Individual Single Elimination matchplay.
18 or 9 holes: 18-hole matchplay recommended, 9 holes permissible*
Since the tourney was started, one idea expressed by players was to have the opportunity to play 18 hole matches as opposed to being limited to 9 holes. Since matches can be scheduled anytime, 18 hole matches will continue to be recommended.

18 strokes maximum handicap for 18 holes (meaning maximum 1 stroke can be given per hole). 9-hole matches are permissible if both players are in agreement (just be flexible either way). The final match must be 18 holes.

Matchplay Handicaps

• Handicaps are calculated based on your top 5 games during the regular season.
• The handicap will not change during the matchplay.
• League subs are also welcomed to enter the matchplay as long as they have an established league handicap. If the sub has played less than 5 rounds, the matchplay handicap will be played at 80%.
• As with USGA Maximum Handicap Index® standard practice (Section 3.4), the maximum Handicap Index is 36.4 for men and 40.4 for women.
• Community members/non-league players are also welcomed--as along a relevant, accurate handicap can be submitted (i.e. USGA, Elks, ACC, or recent scorecards). The submitted handicap will be subject to the same 80% reduction method.
• Players must play from the tee (front, back, middle, etc). that their handicap is based on or make adjustments based on slope and rating (see below).

Scheduling of Matches (phone and email info for each player WILL BE AVAILABLE on this site for all players to use):
• Match scheduling is between you and your opponent. Be FLEXIBLE and don't delay! Please communicate with your opponent and decide on the time/location within a two-week period of each round. If one or both players for an upcoming match are unable to schedule their match in an appropriate timespan, the player or players risk (s) disqualification.

• In an effort to keep the tourney moving along, players who forfeit their matches (unless there are extenuating circumstances--life happens!) will not be permitted to play in the matchplay the following season.

• USGA and local rules (see below) apply but you may choose to apply other rules based on the course condition, skill levels, etc. It’s all up to the two players on the first hole tee box.

LOCAL RULE: You may lift, rake, and place your ball in all bunkers.
LOCAL RULE: You can lift, clean, and place your ball in your fairway only.
LOCAL RULE: You are allowed one club length relief from tree roots (if you're in danger of striking tree roots).

• Email match scorecards to Jason Smith (smithj10@ohio.edu). Scorecard photos can be taken with your smart phone.

How to use a Course's slope rating in deterimining proper handicap:
To properly play handicaps at courses other than OU (as our handicaps result from play at the OU course), you must utilize slope ratings for the course you are playing. At OU, just subtract the lower handicap (with decimal) from the higher handicap (with decimal), and then round the resulting difference, and this would be the allotted differential between handicaps. However, if you are playing elsewhere other than OU (which is totally fine), the course handicap would be calculated as follows:

• Course handicap = handicap index * slope rating/113 For example, Using Oxbow as an example and a handicap index of 19.6 and Oxbow’s slope rating for white tee of 119: 19.6*119/113=20.6. Remember, when calculating your differential with your opponent's index, maintain the single decimal point and only round the resulting differential.

• Holes are played out or until conceded.
