4th Annual OU Golf League Najee Memorial MatchPlay (Fall 2017)

The fall season "Najee" MatchPlay Tourney was conceived by members from the Ohio University Open Golf League in 2014, to commence following regular-season league play. The tourney is dedicated to our good friend and avid golfer Najee Muhammad, who joined the Ohio University faculty in 1996 in the Cultural Studies in Education program (Department of Educational Studies). He also served one year as the interim chair of the Department of African American Studies. A diverse teacher and mentor, Najee was a dedicated student of the game, equally enjoying the "lesson" tee as well walking the university golf course and many other surrounding area courses. Najee passed away on March 8, 2014 (read more).

Rules

• The Najee Memorial MatchPlay Tourney is a Handicapped based Individual Single Elimination matchplay.

18-hole matchplay. 18 strokes maximum for 18 holes (meaning maximum 1 stroke can be given per hole).

Handicaps

•Handicaps are calculated based on your top 5 games during the regular season.
•The handicap will not change during the matchplay.
•Visit this link to view determined handicaps and seeded ranked list for 2017 league players.
•League subs are also welcomed to enter the matchplay as long as they have an established league handicap If the sub has played less than 5 rounds, a 4-stroke deduction will be implemented for 18-hole handicap (remember, it was 2 strokes for our regular season 9 hole matches, sorry we must protect the field).
•As with USGA Maximum Handicap Index® standard practice (Section 3.4), the maximum Handicap Index is 36.4 for men and 40.4 for women.

• Bracket seeds will be based on the matchplay calculated handicap and individual point totals from the 2017 team league season. In case of ties last personal score shot will determine higher seed.

• Match scheduling is up to you and your opponent. Please communicate with each other and decide on the time/location within a two-week period of each round. Players must contact each other and schedule their matches. If one or both players for an upcoming match are unable to schedule their match in time, the player or players risk (s) disqualification. The expected tourney start week (subject to change) is August 20th, 2017, which would estimate the final match being played in late October, thus the imperativeness in getting matches promptly scheduled.

• USGA and local rules (if any) apply but you may choose to apply other rules based on the course condition, skill levels, etc. It’s all up to the two players.

• Email match scorecards to Jason Smith (smithj10@ohio.edu). Scorecard photos can be taken with your smart phone.

How to use a Course's slope rating in deterimining proper handicap:
To properly play handicaps at courses other than OU (as our handicaps result from play at the OU course), you must utilize slope ratings for the course you are playing. At OU, just subtract the lower handicap (with decimal) from the higher handicap (with decimal), and the round the resulting difference, and this would be the allotted differential between handicaps. Howeer, if you are playing elsewhere, the course handicap would be calculated as follows:

• Course handicap = handicap index * slope rating/113 For example, Using Oxbow as an example, my handicap will be calculated with my index of 19.6 and Oxbow’s slope rating for white tee of 119: 19.6*119/113=20.6. Round this number to the closest whole number and my course handicap will be 21.
• Holes are played out or until conceded.
